Return to District 8 News page

New Group Reps will be elected in August for the New Year

They will also vote for District positions in September and Area in October
Here are some short descriptions of District positions. Ask your Higher Power for willingness to serve one day at a time, and encourage others, too. Together we find recovery!

Speakers Bureau Chair
I find speakers for group meetings, speaker marathons, and institutions requesting speakers. I received a notebook from the previous Chair with contacts. I am using those and I've attended different meetings, asking for speakers, too. Once they agree, I share the guidelines provided by WSO on the web. So far, this position has taken less than two hours a week. Everyone has been really helpful and willing to do this service.

Comfort Liason
This position was created by District 8 to keep groups informed concerning member or group requests, i.e. deaths, births, anyone requesting prayer or miscellaneous.

Institutions Service
This job involves taking Al-Anon information to institutions (defined as limited access facilities such as prisons, treatment centers and shelters) and helping to get groups started in these facilities. Tempis fugit, Time Flies.

CPC - Cooperating with the Professional Community
I maintain a mailing list of Professionals in the community passed down from the previous CPC and send out a mailing to those on the list twice a year. I have had the wonderful experience of helping spread the word of Al-Anon that can't really be put into words. Time spent is 30 min or less a month and 2 to 3 hours twice a year with members help to do a mailing.

District Treasurer
I am responsible for the custody of the district funds and maintains the district checking account. The Treasurer deposits funds and writes checks on the account based on the approved budget. The Treasurer balances the bank account monthly and prepares the financial reports to be submitted to the Officers, Group Reps, and Committee Chairs. The Treasurer maintains supporting documentation for all transactions. The Treasurer position requires 2 to 3 hours per month.

Public Information Chair
Along with the Institutions Chair and Cooperating with the Professional Communities Chair, this position helps with the public's awareness of Al-Anon/Alateen Family Groups. In service I, along with other Al-Anon members, have spoken on a local AM radio show and participated in a USF class on "Behavioral Health and the Family," regarding the effects of alcoholism as a family disease.  Each month I attend the District Eight meetings, and report on any public outreach opportunities if applicable.  Aside from the monthly meetings, I usually spend about two hours a month as chairperson. "If the community is informed about the fellowship and understands the help Al-Anon/Alateen can provide, our groups will attract many who need our program of recovery." pg 48 of the Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual .
